Vitré
Vitré, our neighbour, is located at the boundary between France and Brittany. It has, since the 11th century, been protected by a powerful castle to which was later added an enceinte. Vitré evolved into a flourishing commercial city during the 14th century. Its merchants engaged in the international trade of large hemp “canvases” that were particularly sought-after. Within the city walls were built timber-framed houses and stone hotels adorned with a rich sculpted decor. Let yourself be seduced by the medieval splendours of Vitré, city of Art and History.

- Carnaval des Gais Lurons: Brittany’s largest carnival
- “Jazz à Vitré” Festival: Jazz concerts in the bars, streets and concert halls
- Festival de l’Imaginaire: Organized by the Maison des cultures du Monde, this festival presents unique shows in France. This festival is an open stage for people and their least known and rarest forms of expression.
- “Les Sévignales” Festival: Literature
- “Les Sportiviales” Festival: A cultural and athletic festival organized by the La Vitréenne Association and supported by the City of é. Activities include tournaments, sports demonstrations, conferences and city animation.

It is organized by the Comité d’animation cycliste du pays de Vitré and sponsored by the City of Vitré and “Les Délices de Valplessis”, a large ice cream company. A hundred or so world-renown competitive racers participate in this leg.

Madame de Sévigné’s château
Marie de Sévigné, a famous 17th century letter-writer chose to spend much of her time at her favourite country seat, the château des Rochers-Sévigné. The French-style garden and the park surrounding the château are a souvenir of her presence and the alleyways still bear the names she gave them. The château is an ideal starting point for an enjoyable tour around the manor-houses and castles in the surrounding countryside that the marchionness loved so much.
Waterfront
Make the best of the activities available at the numerous lakes in Madame de Sévigné’s Country.
• La Valière artificial lake (between Vitré and Erbrée).
Much appreciated for fishing (100 ha) and also for walking and horse-riding as there is a 6km track around the lake.
